Total Ankle Joint Replacement
A total ankle joint replacement can help you regain mobility and resume normal activities. By removing one or any combination of bones in the ankle and replacing them with artificial joint parts, ankle joint replacement is a highly customized procedure based on your needs.
Not all ankle joints are the same size and must be custom fitted for optimal results. It is because of the specific nature of the procedure that the skill level of the physician, as well as his experience and training techniques, are so important. Dr. Robert M. Brarens is board certified and has completed hours of advanced training for total ankle replacement, which translates into a more functional, faster healing replacement so you can get back on your feet in no time.
Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery
In fact, Dr. Brarens is the only surgeon in the Cincinnati area who is board certified in foot surgery and board certified in rearfoot/ankle surgery, which enables him to perform complex total ankle replacement procedures. He is also the only physician certified to use all three FDA-approved systems for total ankle replacements, allowing more options to accommodate each patient’s individual needs.

Ankle replacements are used to replace damaged bone that has happened as a result of:
- Arthritis
- Bone fracture
- Infection
Total ankle replacements are usually completed under general anesthesia, but some doctors may give you the option of pain control with an epidural or spinal plus sedation to keep you calm during the procedure. Dr. Brarens will work with you to determine what type of anesthesia may be right for you.
After your procedure, you can expect to be in the hospital for 3 to 4 days and your ankle will be casted or placed in a splint for healing. Physical therapy will also be important in your healing process. Dr. Brarens will refer you for therapy in the weeks after your cast is removed.
Ankle replacements can last 10 years or more depending on your activity level, your overall health, and the degree of damage your ankle had prior to the surgery. Many patients report that an ankle replacement completely eliminates their pain.
